Mali Isabel’s first ever collaboration with local Kaurna artist Drew Kilner. Together they created an artwork for Kaurna Yerta’s NAIDOC in the mall event.

The artwork Kardlapurruna is about acknowledging and uplifting the natural beauty of the land we live on and capturing 2024’s national NAIDOC week theme ‘keep the fire burning’.

Beginning with the River Torrens (Karrawirra Parri - red gum forest river), the colours reflect the history of the river as pivotal to the local ecosystem. A family meeting place and a campsite/reunion place is shown, representing where women and children would camp while the men and boys would go off to be initiated in times prior to colonisation.

Elements of foods that were hunted and gathered for palti (ceremony) are shown and Kangaroos are seen roaming freely throughout the land. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags within the native landscape symbolise pride and sovereignty.

Through the perspectives of two young, passionate Aboriginal artists, Kardlapurrna promotes the ongoing vitality and resilience of our people. The artwork celebrates and uplifts mob coming together as one, showcasing our community and ensuring our culture remains alive and thriving.
